New TL Owner: Introduction Included

$

Hey guys,

New member here, from Niagara Falls-Canada.

About 2 weeks ago I purchased my 1st Acura, (3G TL obviously), so I wanted to introduce my self.

I am coming from VW's previously, MK5 GLI and a MK4 GLI (in that order):

First the 2007 MK5 GLI DSG (had from 2009-2011)

Then the 2005 MK4 GLI 6MT (had from 2011 to 2014)

This past winter I proposed to my fiance, and come May we decided to build our 1st home so we bought a lot.

I decided I'd sell my MK4 GLI, as I was looking for something more luxurious and for us to have one car that is a little more comfy for longer drives (she has a R56 Mini)

Well the GLI sold in July, and it took until end of August to finally find something I liked. There were a few other vehicles on my radar, however, I was always in love with the 3G TL and figured this may be the last chance to own one.

After 5 weeks of looking I came across this 2004 Acura TL 5AT, with only 61,500 km (38,200mi). Drove a couple hours to make a deal, dealership didn't go for it... they called me the next day and accepted my offer.

Here it is;

Looking forward to enjoying the Forum and possibly, just possibly, getting bitten by the mod-bug.

Cheers All.

Did the 3G TL have valet keys?

Was going to do a search, but for some reason the ability to search only certain forums has been removed from advanced search options. I dont have a valet key and wasnt sure if there even was one. If there is one, how do I get it?

Where are all of the reviews!?

Ok i'm sorry if this has already been posted but i'm fairly new here and haven't seen anything about it. I did try to do a search but all that came up were owner reviews. Earlier today I posted my 2 week review of the TLX and it got me wandering where all the official reviews are? I know Car And Driver has done a first drive review but they have yet to do an actual road test, same with Motor Trend. Does anyone know why they haven't done full tests yet, or when/if we can expect them anytime soon? Is Acura holding them back?

Shifter cable bushings, where art thou??

So how come there arent any 09+ tsx shifter cable bushings other then those solid aluminum bushings? Ive been waiting for hyrid racing to come out with a set for our second gens. http://www.heeltoeauto.com/pitboard/?p=912

Am I missing something here? Do other honda/acura bushings fit our second gens or something? This would compliment my short shifter/weighted shift knob/shifter base bushings.

So the battery on my car was disconnected and when it was connected back the gps is definitely lost and I can't turn on the radio. It is asking for a code on the little time dash but doesn't give me anywhere to put the code on the NAV screen. If any one can help id appreciate it. Thanks, Have a good day.

Has any one replaced their windshield with an OEM piece yet? I will be looking for one soon at the dealer, because of cracks my currently one has.

Seems like every year or two another ABS sensor goes bad. I've replaced 3 in past 5 years and another one has just gone bad.

I've only used Acura OEM ones in the past. Anyone have experience with the numerous aftermarket ones out there (Airtex/Wells, Standard Motor Products, etc)?

SH-AWD OEM 18" vs 19" RIDE FEEL?

$

Hey guys,

I got a SH-AWD Advance that comes with the 19" rims and its always a very rough ride everyday. Cannot stand it anymore so Im planning to purchase the OEM 18" to soften the ride a bit? But when I checked the tire specs, they are almost similar.

I did not had the chance to test drive the SH-Awd Tech with 18" rims before.

Can somebody please tell me that getting the 18" is worth it and will really soften the ride?

Thanks in advance.

Parting ways with the 3G TL

I decided to finally part ways with my '05 Acura TL. I still have it for the time being, but will be selling it soon. Today I picked up my new car, a 2012 Honda Accord Coupe, with the 6 speed manual and 3.5L V6.

My search for the accord started a few weeks ago, and wasn't going too well. After missing a 2011 6spd with the V6 that was 200 miles away from me and priced fairly the next closest one that was priced fairly was 800 miles away.

I was considering flying up to 1300 miles one-way to pick up an 8th gen accord coupe with the V6 and 6 speed manual, when today one popped up close by that had a fair price in CA. All the others, and I could only find 2, that were for sale in the state the dealers wanted $21k for, the one I picked up a polished metal metallic 2012 CPO with nav and 67k miles on the clock for $17.4k, it was $18.9k out the door after taxes and title.

I had actually been hoping to buy one without the Nav and do a tablet integration, but the 8th gen accords I was looking at flying to pick up were all priced around $17k with-out nav and without warranty and saving myself from having to figure out a way to do the mod was a plus, albeit now I have to deal with the proprietary nature of a Honda navigation system instead just using an in-dash tablet like I have in the TL.

Immediately driving it the car feels more powerful than my 05 AT, that has every bolt-on there is for the car and the accord is bone stock.

I don't miss the extra two doors on the TL or the power passenger's seat, I never had any passengers in the car anyhow nor did I ever bother to ride in my passenger seat.

The only think I'm missing a little so far is the center armrest from the TL that extends out, but I can manage.

This one will stay stock, at least until the TL is sold.

Here's a few pictures of the car, I'll have to get some better ones another day.

I will probably miss the HID headlights, my TL has ZKW-Rs in them and osram 66240 CBIs.

Very few of my modded parts will transfer over, I think just some LED bulbs and my outlaw IM thermoblock spacer.

Rear ended now battery drains after repair..

Hi everyone! I was rear ended pretty badly in my 05 Acura TL the end of April. Was about $5k in damages. Got the car back but they told me they were needing to jump it. Got the car home and went out the next day to go to work and it was completely dead. They towed it back and replaced the battery, but mentioned they had to do wire work on one of the tail lights. Fast forward to yesterday...same thing, car is completely dead and i had driven it the day before. Its not my altenatir as i just had everything checked on my car. They are trying to say that a rear end collision couldnt have caused this but ive read it could be wiring from a trunk light or something that wasnt done correctly thats causing it to drain. Any info/advice?

Thanks

Clutch issues have me wondering

$

So here is the short story. I was coming off the highwat returning home. Went to downshift into second after braking to take a left hand turn into town. Clutch pedal goes straight to the floor, no pressure on the pedal whatsoever.

I managed to jam it into 1st and limp it home.

So far i have replaced the Master, Salve, and entire clutch line with stainless braided line. I cannot seem to build enough pressure to engine the clutch and put it in gear.

When the car is running the pedal feels spongy and soft, but when the car is off the pedal build a little pressure like it should feel.

Do i need to crack the tranny open or am I still chasing air in the system.
BTW Clutch has 8k miles on it after being replaced last year.

Any help would be appreciated.

FYI – Sylvania bulb SETTLEMENT (proposal)

$

QUOTE: A proposed Settlement has been reached with Osram Sylvania Inc. (“Sylvania”). The Settlement resolves claims that Sylvania misrepresented that certain replacement automotive lighting is brighter, provides a wider beam, and allows drivers to see further down the road than standard halogen lighting. It also claims that Sylvania omitted material information regarding the reduced life of the replacement lighting. Sylvania denies that it did anything wrong.

The above from an “add” in MOTORTREND magazine – the lawyers win again. The average “payment” for a consumer would be $10, estimated, according to the magazine add.

Anyway, if you read the printed data on any Sylvania bulb packaging, or what is posted on their web site, there should be no surprises. Or if you simply read my summary comments in the BULB REPLACEMENT GUIDE, as below.

Besides, Sylvania is hardly alone in advertising and selling bulbs based on exaggerated claims. And Sylvania actually provides sufficient technical information to make an informed purchasing decision, while not other company does. But of course, the other companies are *small* and don’t have *deep-pockets” like Sylvania.

DIY – bulb replacement guide
http://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=798037
*********
NOTE: the Sylvania web site will give information regarding the CP (candle power) or MSCD, lumens, voltage/ watts, estimated life-hours, and other information for (most) Sylvania bulbs. Technical information, especially regarding life-time hours for other brands is difficult or impossible to come by.

NOTE ON USING BRIGHTER REPLACEMENT BULBS: brighter-than-standard bulbs, same watts as the standard bulb, have a shorter life than the standard bulb. And they cost more. Sometimes the life may be only 1/4 that of a standard bulb, only 30% brighter, yet cost twice as much.

Also note that Sylvania SilverStar bulbs, have the same lumens rating as their standard bulbs, no matter how much “brighter” the advertising says. Only the Kelvin color rating differs, for the same type of bulb. This applies to most brands – I am not just picking on Sylvania. Also, any bulb which is DOT legal, is by definition limited in the amount of lumens it makes, so really no manufacturer can make a (legal) bulb that has more lumens than the DOT standard (for that bulb type).

This seems to me quite a racket by the bulb makers: manufacturer a bulb with 30% brighter (advertised) light, but 1/4 the life, and charge twice the price. This makes the actual bulb cost 8 times the standard bulb (for the same life usage). And if you read the ‘fine-print’, often the brightness comparison is between a NEW higher rated bulb, and an OLD degraded (dim) standard bulb.

This is a quote from the Sylvania web site, and is also printed on most SilverStar packaging:Claims based on measured comparisons between SilverStar and SilverStar Ultra product families at 100% light output and standard halogen bulbs at 80% light output. Actual performance may vary by product use, vehicle model and usage.

And what about those bulbs which are rated at dual wattages? such as 65 watt = 115 watts? The short answer is that this is just more BS advertising. Usually, the reference is to a bulb that has a Kelvin whiter color, with the same watt rating as a standard bulb. The whiter color “looks” brighter (to some anyway). The real problem with these bulbs is simply that there is usually no actual real data given, such as lumens output, life-hours, etc. Without actual tech data, it is difficult to tell what you are really buying. About the only thing which is certain, is the bulb will be very expensive and burn out quickly. (my cynicism)

PCB Issue - Replacing the Headunit?

$

Hey all,
I recently bought an 04 TSX with apparently the common PCB failure. I've been reading all of the threads and found a lot of great information, but 1 thing that I haven't found answer to is this:

1) If the PCB is located in the Radio Head unit, what happens when you replace the HU? Do the Temp control buttons no longer light up?

I've been playing with the idea of upgrading to a Multimedia unit possibly with Navigation to gain the blue tooth capabilities, navi, touch screen, etc...but if I do so do the other lights no longer work?

I'm guessing I'm missing something here, any help would be appreciated!

SRS light on - could this be the cause?

$

When I bought my car, the previous owner or the owner before that disconnected the cable that triggers chime for an unbuckled seat belt (or at least that's what I think that unplugged cable underneath the driver's seat is for).

I was wondering if that unplugged cable would cause the SRS light to turn on.

Here's a oic of the cable that I'm talking about: http://imgur.com/en7wlPX

Either way, I'm taking it to the Acura dealer this Monday to have them do the recall for the airbag that was around 2009 I believe as well as the recent one that came up.

Any thoughts?

Question about under hood items

$

I purchased a 2013 Acura TL SH-AWD 6 speed. I wanted a new one and tried to order one, but my dealer couldn't get one. So I ended up with a very lightly used one despite my extreme fear of used cars. The CarFax is clean and I had a mechanic check it out who said everything looked perfect. That said, I'm still paranoid since it's a used car and looking under the hood I had a few questions.

The first one is I noticed here (not sure what this piece is called), that it had a number written on it. Does this look like it's been replaced with a junk yard part? I've never noticed writing on a factory car.

The next question I have is are these braces the body color? I've got a graphite gray car, but noticed these brackets were black. I feel like I'm being overly paranoid, but just wanted to see if they were the same color on the rest of you guys cars.

Thanks guys.
