Its been known for some time that Infiniti is planning a crossover version of its upcoming Q30 compact car, and today we have our first official look at the vehicle by way of a teaser. The teaser is for a thinly-veiled concept version that's set to debut next month at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The new compact crossover will be called the QX30, and like the Q30 hatch, whose styling it will mimic, it will be based on the MFA premium compact car platform developed by Mercedes-Benz. Thus, while the Q30 will be similar to Mercedes MFA-based A-Class hatch, the QX30 will be similar to the Mercedes GLA compact crossover. Where Infiniti hopes its own pair of compacts will stand out from the crowd is in the styling department. The QX30 is said to combine the sleek lines of a coupe with the rugged looks and commanding seating position of a crossover. Both the QX30 and Q30 are confirmed for sale in the U.S., however, their target market will be Europe where the premium compact class is dominated by German brands Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Production will take place at a Nissan plant in Sunderland, England, with the Q30 due to roll off the line later this year and the QX30 sometime in 2016. The Q30 will go on sale in Europe this fall but well have to wait until 2016 to see it. Speaking Wards Auto, Infinitis U.S. chief Michael Bartsch said no new Infinitis will be launched here this year, including the next-generation Q60 coupe which was previewed in concept form at the recent Detroit Auto Show. Both the Q30 and new Q60 were due towards the end of 2015. Bartsch now says the timing will be closer to early 2016. The only newish offering Infiniti fans can look forward to this year will be a new entry-level Q50 powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. |
